Bat mitzvah means, literally, “daughter of the commandment.” Historically, bat mitzvah represented a ceremonial recognition that a young person had reached the age when she was no longer a minor according to Jewish law and thereby took on new religious privileges and responsibilities of an adult.
When Violet becomes a bat mitzvah, she will lead portions of the Shabbat service, be called to the Torah for the first time, and deliver a d’var torah (a short speech about the week’s Torah portion).
